River People

This blanket was designed exclusively for Pendleton by Lillian Pitt. She was inspired by petroglyphs in the Columbia River Gorge and Central Oregon. Her ancestors lived in the Gorge for more than 10,000 years until the mid-1800s. They called themselves the River People, and they called the Columbia River simply Big River. The repeated patters on the River People blanket are known as the Salmon Gill design. The design represents the various life stages of the salmon's migratory life cycle and the River People who depended upon the fish for sustenance.
